many hours in the garage spent looping on saturday . some very experimental loops, some riff based solo-fests
I was going for a bluesy riff at the start of this one . i like certain parts of this one a lot, while others encourage me to rethink my "no content edits" philosophy.
investigating some of the non-sos potential of the dd-20, at first . then the eventide with on-the-fly loop mangling . then some novation supernova 2 live patch exploration
abstract fun with harmonizers
acoustic melodies on acoustic melodies . lots of super wet magnetic path improv melodies and lead on top of those
my favorite loop of the day . this was great fun to play
after the "sad story" night, I was anxious to get back out there and re-create the magic that was lost . this time with "tape" rolling . it took me some time to get back out there, and the results differ significantly from the goal. here's what happened
very saturated guitars . string noise as loop fuel . plinky acoustic for contrast
acoustic . mellow . melodic . very saturated leads are the order of the day
i wanted to pursue Steve Reich's guitar phase approach a bit to see what melodies develop by the same part oscillating over itself, so i did . everything on this track was done in a single take, and every sample of the take is included, but i did pull the parts to different tracks and overlap them in post to reduce "loop evolution wait factor" . we're still looking at 17 minutes . i continue to pursue the perfect length and melody combination . elusive . indeed
last night (09.05.06) I was looping away, right? so I go into the house to get my laptop and start tracking . it's kind of late, so I figure "ah, screw it - i need to go to bed" . back out to the garage to shut everything down . I pick up the guitar and keep going, of course . the next hour or so delivers probably 30-40 minutes of the best loops I've ever done . of course . that'll teach me (again) . sigh
warming up after a "change in venue".
Along the same vein as the previous loop, but probably a bit better.
It occurred to me that I never loop with an arpeggiator aspect, so I decided to give it a shot.
ambience and more (or less)
a stereo pair of electric guitar reverse loops.
To me, live looping is all about improv. After acquiring the gear that makes live looping possible, and quickly losing forever the first several looping attempts to the aether, I decided to record every loop I could. These loops comprise 9 of the next 15 loops I recorded. They're pretty haphazard, because I hadn't yet established a personal approach to looping (which I've actually been trying to avoid ever since). Maybe this explains the somewhat broad flavor.
The eventual rhythm is somewhat disjointed, and I'm ok with that. In looping, the quirks of non-quantized rhythms soon feel natural.
An ambient beginning with exploratory noodle overlay.
Body by eventide. Squidge by Kurzweil.
This loop was well underway before I thought to press record. All the parts in the rhythm (the acoustic and the "whistly" synth) were entirely ad-libbed, as were the eventide enhanced soloing (random patch selection strategy).
Takes a while to develop, but little parts you expect to be of no consequence become key melodies in the bigger scheme.
This one is actually based on an acoustic guitar piece I'd been kicking around - so it's not fully improvisational.
Lots of ambience - good stuff awaits the patient listener.
Another chunk of acoustic guitar riff I had been messing with. The base riff is in 25/8, and all the overlapping parts are improvised, sometimes in the same time signature, sometimes not.
Incidentally, this riff was eventually turned into asong, we refer to as the stupid.
More ambience, squidge and happy-accidents.
